Hathipole Market Udaipur: What to Buy, How to Reach & Other Activities

We absolutely dig visiting local markets or bazaars as they are called in India. During our recent visit to Udaipur, Hathipole market was on top of our list. Though all over Rajasthan, one finds alluring  handicrafts, shopping in Udaipur is fun as it teams up with visiting scenic spots that dot the city. Exploring the local markets helps one experience the local life and we never miss an opportunity to visit one- Mapusa market in Goa, floating markets of Bangkok or the irresistible silver jewellery market in Bhuj, we have been to many.

Frequented by locals and tourists alike, the market is located near City Palace. We visited the market in late afternoon after enjoying a serene ride over Lake Pichola. Shops in Hathipole market stay open from 11 am till 10 pm, so visitors get enough time to look around.

What Can I Buy Here?

Exquisite handicrafts made with metals, marble and wood, traditional wooden furniture, colorful and bright textiles- especially Bandhej, Lehriya and Indigo prints, wooden toys, leather items- traditional mojris, jootis, bags, passport holders and more, handcrafted marble waterfalls and ethnic bags with beautiful embroidery work, dresses and more.

Do watch out for the hand made traditional camel skin footwear with attractive embroidery and miniature paintings known as Pichwai and Phad paintings make attractive gifts for loved ones back home. Look around for traditional Rajasthani quilts that come in exquisite prints and can be a great addition to your home decor.

The shop owners may quote higher prices, so be sure to bargain (well, its double the fun to indulge in some haggling before settling for a price)

The Market has narrow lanes, so explore on foot. Parking around the market can be difficult due to heavy traffic. Parking can be found around City Palace area.The markets remains closed on Sundays.
