SodaBottleOpenerWala Powai Review
A new outpost of a popular restaurant, especially one near home always gets our taste buds tingling! Why? Simple. Because its easier to enter foodie heaven. When SodaBottleOpenerWala, a quintessential Bombay Irani Café already popular in Bandra & Thane in Mumbai, opened its doors in Powai, we didn't waste a minute. Who could refuse the tempting taste of Berry Pulao, Parsi Mutton Masala Roast, Chicken Farcha & other Parsi fare?
The decor of the Powai outlet is similar in its quirkiness to other outlets with stain glass accents that blend well with comfortable yet mismatched furniture. Parsi family tree frames, antique accents, quirky posters squeezed between the table cloth all add to its old world colonial charm. We always make a point to read the signature large blackboard touting the ‘Rules of the establishment’ & laugh aloud. The "No picking nose" rule on the board had us laughing in endless mirth.
Apart from signature dishes like Parsi Mutton Masala Roast, Prawn Patio & Bombay favorites like Kanda Bhaji, Tardeo A/C Market Mamaji’s Grilled Sandwich, Spicy Mushroom on Khari & more, this time we sat down to sample special Persian menu curated by pop star Anaida Parvaneh. The menu offers a glimpses of Persian cuisine & we were eager to know!! Anaida was one of the first pop stars, I had worked with in my career as a celebrity manager & we were both delighted to have met many years later!!
We started with Irani Haleem - a slow cooked traditional porridge, popular in Iran & served mainly for breakfast. The main ingredients in this dish are wheat paste & meat (our version had lamb) & the dish requires expertise & patience. The Haleem was delicious with well blended flavors of meat & wheat paste, served garnished with fried onions & fresh mint leaves. We paired the Haleem with some freshly baked bread from the bakery.
Next, we tried Fesenjan- a classic Persian chicken stew cooked in pomegranate molasses & walnuts. Rich & warm flavors of walnuts mingle with sharp berry taste of pomegranate making a perfect sauce. Baghali Polo- a delicious preparation of steamed rice made with fresh fava beans & dill is a great choice for vegetarians.
Esfahan Beryani - a rich biryani made with absolutely NO rice!! Soft lamb meat cooked with minimal spices & saffron, served in a minced form on top of freshly baked bread!!! This one actually spanked the rice from biryani & we did not miss it!!!
Black Lime Flavored Lamb Shank (Khorak-E-Gosht) - lamb shanks slow cooked with onions, chickpeas & mild spices & flavored with Persian black lime was succulent & filling dish. We paired the delicious food with tingling cocktails - The Bumsuckerwala a delicious cocktail made with raspberry, vodka & thyme & Maushi Chi a cocktail made by adding tequila to a pineapple flavored home mixture, a beautiful ode to the famous Bandra Aunty.
Mumma Nu Double Dose- a cocktail made with scotch, egg white (that makes the cocktail frothy), hints of lime & saffron is a must try.
Just like the other outlets of SodaBottleOpenerWala, the newly opened Powai outlet serves delicious food at value for money prices value served by attentive staff. Patrons can also enjoy freshly baked delights like Ginger Biscuit, Shrewsbury Biscuit, Mawa Cake & more from the bakery.
