Review: Persian Darbar in Byculla, Mumbai

What you See - Nostalgia mingled with my hunger pangs as we drove past the Jijamata Udyan Zoo, en-route to Persian Darbar, Byculla. Handing over the car to the prompt valet service, we stepped inside and encountered people happily savoring delicacies in the comfortable but basic seating area. Upstairs, the scenario changed completely with mosaic-tiled glasswork, huge paintings depicting mosques and bright curtains lapping gently in the air-conditioned breeze. In a separate enclosure, we could also see a private dining area with low seating where a group was enjoying a hearty meal. Winding staircase announced more seating areas a level up.

What you get - The versatile menu boasts of Persian, North Indian, Mughlai, Lebanese and Chinese delicacies. There is a wide choice, which offers tikka, kebab, biryani, Indian breads and gravy dishes for the main course, beverages like milkshakes and freshly squeezed juices and desserts.

Biryani is the signature dish of Persian Darbar and we tried the Kepsa biryani with pineapple raita for the main course, which is good for two to three adults. Well done, huge pieces of mutton marinated in non spicy masalas had white fluffy rice layered on top. The raita, a yogurt preparation had chunky and juicy pineapple pieces, making it a nice accompanist to the biryani. How can one resist caramel custard if its on the menu? We tried one each and were not disappointed.

Verdict - The menu is huge with good options in starters, main Course, beverages and desserts. If not very hungry, one can opt for light bites like sandwiches as well.Raan, which means leg of a goat, comes in more than 10 varieties to suit your taste. If you go in a group of three or more, order the Raan Biryani, which is delicious and a specialty.During Ramadan time, Persian Darbar is one of the places to enjoy Iftari delicacies like tikkas (starting price at INR 230/- onwards), tawa kebabs, biryanis (starting price at INR 150/- onwards) and more. To indulge one’s sweet tooth there is a small area at the entrance selling barfis and halvas done in pure homemade ghee. Home delivery is available, but indulging into your carnivorous side while seated in the restaurant is pure fun. Sit in any one of the three dining areas, with the same menu but a slight difference in prices.

  1. We were a group of 12 and tried the raan biryani. It was delicious. We decided to try Persian Darbar after reading this review. Thanks.
