Review: Red Olives, a Multi-cuisine Delight!
What you see-
On a rainy Mumbai evening, tired and hungry we stumbled across Red Olives at Powai in Mumbai. The hostess warmly welcomed us and led us an empty table, and we noted that the restaurant was surprisingly full even at the early hour.
Soft ambiance lighting helped us to settle instantly as we looked around appreciatively at various curtains made of beads and crystal. Wooden tones dominate the restaurant interiors and artifacts like the statue of Buddha add character. The open bar was a hub of activity and we witnessed the bartender mixing various cocktails. The female serving staff moved smilingly accepting orders. The well laid out table had small white tablets, which caught our fancy. Some cool water was poured on it and voila, it turned into a wet towel!
What you get-
To our surprise, we found out from the server that Red Olives serves Mughlai, Thai, Chinese and limited Kerala cuisines. Also what caught our eye was the konkan style of preparations for various seafood dishes. Konkan region, a section of the western coastline of India from Raigad to Mangalore is known for its seafood delicacies.
The placard placed on the table, announced of an ongoing “Biryani and Barbecue Festival” offering varieties of mouth watering Biryani & authentic kebabs. Contemplating, we settled for a glass of chilled rose wine. To go with it for starters we ordered crispy fried calamari. Batter coated, perfectly fried squid came served with slices of lime and were devoured in no time! As the wine disappeared our hunger grew. Next we tried exotic stir fry vegetables. Cubes of broccoli, carrots, baby corn, water chestnut and zucchini were tossed in butter garlic sauce.
For the main course, we chose Red Thai chicken curry which came served with a pot of steam rice. Diced chicken was cooked in red curry paste and coconut milk flavored with lime leaves. We found the curry flavorsome and filling. For dessert we ordered honey noodles with ice cream. This hot and cold dessert was an instant hit! Crispy fried noodles came drizzled with honey and served with a huge dollop of vanilla ice cream. We folded the evening happy and content.
Our Verdict-
Located in the heart of Powai, Red Olives is a fine dining multi cuisine restaurant. The restaurant also offers the facility for larger groups to enjoy in a private dining room that can seat up to 22 people. Couples can enjoy a quiet evening as the tables are well spaced with beaded curtains providing much needed privacy. There is a lunch buffet from Monday to Friday priced at Rs 395 per person plus taxes. The service was a highlight with the ever attentive and smiling female servers. Their male counterparts could learn a thing or two! Valet parking is available.
